Dear Residents,

I have now qualified as a Wildlife Crime Officer within Sussex Police, it is a subject I have always been very passionate about, and feel very privileged to be part of the team.

It is a sad fact, wildlife crime comes second only to drug related crime, with your help we can try to reduce it.

Please do not worry, I am still your local PCSO, my wildlife duties are done in conjunction with my current role.

If you have any questions about wildlife or any information regarding wildlife crime please contact me in the usual way.

Dear Residents

I will be starting a surgery at Coldean Library commencing on the Thursday 3rd, February 2011, at 10:30, to be run fortnightly. Here you can discuss any concerns or queries, you may have, whether it be a local concern, crime prevention advice or you would just to meet your local officer. However if you wish to speak to me about a more confidential matter, I have access to a private office for that purpose. Please do come in for a chat and a cup of tea, and support Coldean Library and Sussex Police in this endeavour.

I look forward to seeing you there.

With Regards

Tom

CRIME TRENDS / SIGNIFICANT ARRESTS / COMMENT:-

There has been a rise in criminal damage to vehicles, mostly wing mirrors being damaged. However crime in general is down.

Significant Arrests

Travellers

The group of “Native” Travellers, with approximately 15 live-in vehicles, and another 6 associated vehicles remain on council owned land. The local authority have successfully applied for a Possession Order contrary to Part 55 CPR however no date has been set for the eviction. The local authority are now awaiting advice from the Policy Officer for housing, as well as advice from a Barrister prior to deciding on the date of eviction. I confirm Police have not received any calls relating to this encampment.

Varley Hall Car Park Coldean Lane, Brighton (East)

This encampment consists of “Native” Travellers with 29 associated vehicles. On 20th December 2010 the local authority appeared at the County Court for a Possession Order contrary to Part 55 CPR. The local authority successfully obtained the Possession Order. I am now advised the re-arranged court date is subject to the availability of court listings and a likely date is sometime in March. I confirm Police have received two calls relating to noise on this encampment.

Amex should pay for residents to have permits in their vehicles, and guest permits for visitors to our homes. If, on match days, you do not have a permit, your car is towed.

  2. jo freeland says:

parking was so bad on 2/1/12 for southampton match that the bus couldnt go through coldean and had to go straight down coldean lane dropping off at varley halls, leaving us to walk to our homes among us a number of elderly passengers,we need wardens or police to ensure this doesnt happen in future, also that people dont park on grass verges our lovely green spaces in coldean are begining to be churned up by supporters who have no respect for our community, something needs to be done asap.

  3. Robin Berry says:

    Hi Wally/E Cardwright
Steve Reeves the transport manager for the stadium is working with the council and police to stop the parking in Coldean. The football club are looking to expand the seating at the stadium, but the council are concerned about the parking, I believe they are looking at a piece of ground to the south of the stadium to create parking spaces. Steve is aware of the problems in Coldean and it appears that the problems of parking are being caused by home fans, even though they have plenty of park and ride space some fans still insist on park in the local communities.
The Residents Association are having double yellow lines put around the corners of the slip roads at the bottom of Hawkhurst rd to prevent dangerous parking and posts installed on the grass verges along to Rotary Lodge to stop vehicles parking on the grass, we asked the local residents and they thought this was a good idea.
The Withdean area was small compaired with the area they have to cover now Falmer, Moulsecoomb, and Coldean but we have asked for more stewards in Coldean. Unfortunately we can’t stop people parking in Coldean and with the stadium and the development at Varley Halls I fear the parking could get worse.
We will do our best to address your problems so thanks to both of you for your comments,

    Robin (web master)

Sadly l have to agree match days make it impossible to park your car. We live in rushlake rd and it’s full of speeding cars desperately trying to find a parking space. They have 35 wardens in flamer preventing parking we have zero, why?
Also crime seems to have risen with spates of burglaries since the stadium opened, could this be due to the increased footfall walking our streets the police think its opportunistic it would be interesting to seems some stats

  5. wally Sweetman says:

I’m getting concerned about parking in Coldean on Brighton & Hove Match Days, every game more cars turn up, I live in Arlington Crescent if you arrive home at 6.15 or more you cannot park near your house if you arrive home after 7 you cannot park for miles. I thought when the stadium opened parking was to be a resident only area like it was around Withdean. I realise this may not be your area (B’ton council issue) just wondering how everyone else feels.
    Thanks
